The official Final Fantasy VII Remake Twitter account has shared yet another social post about character designs and outfits as they appear in this reimagining. This time, we've been given a look at Cloud's Chocobo shirt from FFVII rebirth, with a neat little look at the Chocobo pattern that appears on the button-up.

You can take a look at Cloud's Chocobo shirt from FFVII Rebirth below.

https://twitter.com/FFVIIR_CLOUD/status/1827903798334959717

While the post doesn't dive into any kind of developer details, it does feature the aforementioned closer look at the pattern on the shirt. It features three Chocobos, a prominent fixture in the Final Fantasy series, and are especially notorious in the original FFVII for the Chocobo Breeding mini-game.

Previously, Square Enix shared more in-depth looks at character outfits and some stylistic decisions that went into how they appear in both remakes. Tseng was one such character to receive a bit more of a "deep dive." The post looked at various concepts Square Enix had for this specific character, which included various textures and cuts for his suit.

This is just one of many posts where Square Enix has shared such information. Details about Aerith and Tifa's various costumes have also appeared in the past.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available for PlayStation 5.

Hololive CEO Would Like to Collaborate With AAA Game Developers https://www.siliconera.com/hololive-vtuber-ceo-would-to-see-collaborate-with-aaa-developers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hololive-vtuber-ceo-would-to-see-collaborate-with-aaa-developers https://www.siliconera.com/hololive-vtuber-ceo-would-to-see-collaborate-with-aaa-developers/#respond Mon, 26 Aug 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1049229 Hololive Collaborations

Founded in 2016, Cover Corporation, owners of hololive Production, took the world by storm during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, introducing the world at large to what would become an international sensation: Vtubers. Since skyrocketing in popularity, hololive introduced talents such as Gawr Gura, Mori Calliope, and Usada Pekora. Siliconera had the opportunity to speak with Motoaki “Yagoo” Tanigo, the CEO of Cover, to discuss what it takes to become a prospective Vtuber candidate for hololive and what collaborations he’d like to see come to fruition.

“We focus on how to support our talents, and this is one of the most important policies within our company. We don’t increase the amount of talents we have in a short amount of time so that we can support our talents to the best of our ability,” Tanigo stated. “We care about our talents a lot and want to provide a lot of resources for them. If we have more talents to debut, that would be fantastic, but we wouldn’t be able to support them equally.” He further went on to elaborate and stated that creating 3D models for the company's talents for concerts and other performances is a lot more extensive than some might realize, with talents needing to fly out to Japan during the creation of these models. Tanigo also stressed that while Hololive would love to expand their roster of VTuber talents, the company would not be able to support the line-up it already has if it expanded too quickly.

While hololive is no doubt an international success, Tanigo shared that the North American group is not as profitable as its Japanese counterpart. He said he hoped that upon opening the North American office for hololive (Cover), that the agency will begin to see a return on their investment in their North American talents. However, that hasn’t stopped Hololive from debuting European talents as well, with the VTuber agency branching into an audience it has no doubt already tapped into — just in a handful of different languages.

I asked Tanigo what it would take for an up-and-coming VTuber or content creator to join hololive. He stated that while applications are always open, a prospective candidate needs to be incredibly driven. This is one of several deciding factors, along with their calibur of singing and ability to speak several different languages. He did mention that not being able to sing wouldn’t mean that a prospective talent would be out of the running, but that anyone who wants to join Hololive would need to understand the amount of time and dedication that would be required. “I want people that dream big,” he said.

“One of our talents, Mori Calliope, wanted to sing an anime opening. So we supported her in that and helped make her dream happen. And we want to be able to support our talents in that avenue as well. We want them to dream big and we want to help them achieve those dreams.” Given how large hololive is, it doesn’t come as any surprise that this would be one of the requirements to join the agency. With several of hololive’s largest Vtuber talents appearing at a Los Angeles Dodgers game in July 2024, it seems like Hololive wants to continue to explore new avenues and new promotions with big names.

However, Tanigo has ambitions and dreams of his own when it comes to potential collaborations. “I would love to do something with Riot Games.” Tanigo admitted to being a big fan of League of Legends, and even dreamed of hololive doing some kind of collaboration with Riot Games’ K-Pop group K/DA. He hoped that with the opening of the North American office, that these partnerships and collaborations will eventually come to fruition.

And while fans already released several games under the hololive Indie label, such as Idol Showdown and Holo X Break, Tanigo stated he would like to create something with AAA Western developers if given the opportunity. He did not share what kind of game he would like to make, only that he would like to collaborate with large studios in North America.

As it stands, hololive remains a giant in the Vtuber industry. Cover garnered international success, tapping into various audiences through its numerous collaborations, to truly make Vtubing something mainstream. After the appearance of Gawr Gura, Hoshimachi Suisei, and Usada Pekora at the Dodgers game, it can be hard to deny just how effective and successful Cover was at making both itself and its talents into a recognizable brand. And with hololive now properly branching into the European market with hololive EN Justice and being as selective as it is with talents and debuts, it seems like there’s no sign of it slowing down. Whether or not we’ll see major collaborations in games has yet to be seen.

I Played Through World of Warcraft Shadowlands for a Cosmetic to Use in The War Within https://www.siliconera.com/i-played-through-world-of-warcraft-shadowlands-for-a-cosmetic-to-use-in-the-war-within/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=i-played-through-world-of-warcraft-shadowlands-for-a-cosmetic-to-use-in-the-war-within https://www.siliconera.com/i-played-through-world-of-warcraft-shadowlands-for-a-cosmetic-to-use-in-the-war-within/#respond Mon, 26 Aug 2024 09:45:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1049281 World of Warcraft Shadowlands

Oh World of Warcraft, how I've come to love you. It's been some time since I've grown to appreciate and enjoy an MMORPG this much. I mean, I write about it every few months if I'm given the opportunity, just because I enjoy talking about it. And with Blizzard Entertainment sharing some of the Talent Trees that would be available with the release of World of Warcraft The War Within, I took it upon myself to go through one of the MMORPG's least liked expansions, Shadowlands, for the sake of a cosmetic.

See, I wanted a specific cosmetic for World of Warcraft: The War Within, and it was only obtainable after getting to a certain point in Shadowlands. I like to get immersed in a game, and I've done a bit of role-playing in FFXIV and now WoW, so if I can get something that really adds to my character I'll grind for it. I've started running Nighthold Mythic for a specific set of Death Knight gear, and learning that Void Elves, Blood Elves, and Night Elves get a Darkfallen cosmetic option through Shadowlands I had to do it. I seem to like all of the baddies in the Warcraft universe, Arthas being my favorite and Sylvanas Windrunner being a close second, so I was absolutely going to double down and get this eye and skin customization for my Dark Ranger — one of the new Hero Talent trees in The War Within.

Coming from Final Fantasy XIV to World of Warcraft, Shadowlands feels like more of the same. You need to save everyone from a world-ending threat, one that threatens to tear you and your companions apart, with the stakes escalating over and over again until you can't imagine them rising any higher. It's standard storytelling within the medium, but the key difference between the two being execution. I think in some ways Final Fantasy XIV does it better, even if I'm not keen on a lot of the narrative decisions. Shadowlands on the other hand just felt like I was being a tourist. A tourist going through the various levels of World of Warcraft "Super Hell," but a tourist all the same. I couldn't tell you what I did, because the events of Shadowlands has been mostly expunged from my memory, with the exception of the cutscene with Uther. Because every time Arthas shows up something in my brain lights up and I get absolutely feral like most Warcraft fans do.

Between unlocking each of the four worlds I would race back to the player hub in Shadowlands, because each World of Warcraft expansion has one to fit the zone, to see if the required quest for the Darkfallen cosmetic unlock would finally show up. I just wanted Shadowlands to be over. In part because I wasn't enjoying the Anima gathering part of the faction stuff (I allied with the group that felt inspired by Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula), and I just wanted to play a Hunter really, really badly. Once I ground through enough of the faction content I saw the quest marker appear and I picked it up, eager to unlock the glowing red eyes and milky skin of the Darkfallen. Because apparently I really love playing Elves in World of Warcraft, specifically Undead Elves. (I have two Death Knights, and three Hunters. All five are some flavor of Elf.)

It felt so satisfying to finally have this option available. Unfortunately, I did the quest on my Death Knight so I'm never getting the Dark Hunter gear set. But hey! At least I have another customization option for the Void Elf, Night Elf, and Blood Elf. Because I'm probably going to make another one to give Warlock a spin, or something. Or maybe I'll just make another Death Knight. I don't know. But I will say this. Getting through the quest to unlock the Darkfallen, at least on Alliance side, was interesting. I learned more about the Forsaken post-Sylvanas, and about the Undead that still inhabited the kingdom of Lordaeron. It was just a nice bit of lore tucked away in an optional quest that gave me something cool. And that's what I love about World of Warcraft. All of these neat little additions and bits of worldbuilding and other unlockables you can get just from some random side-quest.

Was it worth it grinding through Shadowlands for? For me, absolutely. Was the World of Warcraft Shadowlands expansion as bad as everyone said it was? I don't know. My opinion on these things never really align with the norm. I just know that it was mostly forgettable, and in the past I've said that's the worst thing a game could be. So maybe. But hey, at least I get to play a Darkfallen Dark Ranger!

World of Warcraft is available for PC, with The War Within expansion readily available.

Ishikawa was also partially responsible for the Endwalker expansion, writing alongside other Main Scenario Writer Banri Oda. Both the Endwalker and Shadowbringers expansions were critically acclaimed and well received by the Final Fantasy XIV community. There was unanimous praise concerning several character storylines and how the narrative concluded. However, her involvement concerning the Main Scenario quests in the MMORPG ended there, as another writer took over for the Dawntrail expansion.

MARVELOUS and G-MODE have announced Harvest Moon Life and Love (or Bokujou Monogatari Life and Love) will release for PC through Steam. However, a release date has yet to be announced. Additionally, the game will not have English language support.

Harvest Moon Life and Love originally appeared as a mobile game in 2007. Players can choose between a male or female protagonist, and much like previous Harvest Moon titles, will focus on cultivating your farm, raising animals, and mine.

Interestingly enough, the game will support Xbox and PlayStation controllers, with the Steam page stating that this is the preferred way to play the port. The page also has a handful of screenshots, which show conversations between villagers, and the player character tending to their farm.

This title was exclusive to Japan, and to mobile phones, and will be available for the first time on PC (and available to purchase outside of Japan). A release date will be revealed in the future.

Another Harvest Moon mobile game is set to release on August 23, 2024. Harvest Moon: Home Sweet Home will include everything life and farming simulator players have come to expect. You'll be able to raise farm animals, tend to crops, and form relationships with villagers.

Harvest Moon Life and Love (or Bokujou Monogatari Life and Love) will release for PC through Steam sometime in the future.

Black Myth Wukong has been banned in Taiwan. According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the game is unavailable to purchase within Taiwan. The image itself shows that the game is not available to purchase on PlayStation 5.

However, consumers in Taiwan will still be able to purchase the game if they change their region to Taiwan. GameScience has not made a comment as to why the game is unavailable to purchase within that reason.

You can view the social media post sharing that Black Myth Wukong has been banned in Taiwan below.

Black Myth Wukong has been the subject of several controversies. The first appeared ahead of the release of the game where social media posts from one of the developers on Weibo, a Chinese social media website, were shared. These posts included sexually suggestive language, and discriminatory remarks towards women.

More recently, the streaming requirements for the game were shared online. Topics streamers who were provided codes were not allowed to address more than a handful of topics, some of which included feminist propaganda and COVID-19.

Black Myth Wukong is available for PC through Steam and PlayStation 5.

With World of Warcraft's The War Within expansion set to release on August 26, 2024 (August 22 for Early Access), it makes a lot of sense that Diablo IV would have some kind of crossover. Blizzard Entertainment IPs aren't a stranger to these kinds of collaborations. If you purchased Diablo IV's priciest edition then you would get an exclusive mount in World of Warcraft. So seeing the Celestial Steed appear in Diablo IV isn't the craziest thing I've seen.

It's just incredible that it's shown up in yet another Blizzard game. While grinding through dungeons in World of Warcraft I was chatting with a friend who had played the MMORPG since it's inception. They told me about the controversy surrounding this specific horse (dubbed the Sparklepony by the community at large), and that it was one of Blizzard's first MTX (microtransactions) in the game. They had a good laugh when I mentioned how much it costed in Diablo IV, which is a whopping $25. Originally the mount cost somewhere around $15 in World of Warcraft, and has now appeared at the T&W Trading post.

If you're unfamiliar with the history of this horse, well, a lot of consumers believe that it killed StarCraft. There have been some suggestions that this mount outsold StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, which is incredible to consider, but also deeply depressing.

But The Celestial Steed isn't the only thing that's made it over into Diablo IV. Outfits inspired by Kael'Thas, Varian Wrynn, Sylvanas Windrunner, and The War Within's antagonist Xal'atath have made it into the shop as well. Seeing any kind of Blood Elf related cosmetic has me frothing at the mouth (I have come to understand what kind of World of Warcraft player I am, and that's one that has unintentionally exclusively only played some flavor of Elf), so I used what free currency I had accumulated and purchased the Kael'Thas cosmetic for the Sorcerer. I liked the glowing eyes and strange headpiece that came with it, and have decided this is my look for Season 5. Having just enough currency left over from that purchase, I dipped into my reserves and purchased the Xal'atath cosmetic for the Necromancer. I don't know, I guess I'm just a sucker for floating orbs.

Weirdly enough, this is the kind of crossover I want to see in Blizzard games. Mostly because, with the exception of Overwatch (StarCraft doesn't count, it's dead in the ground at this point) all of Blizzard's games kind of adhere to the same design philosophy of massive shoulder armor and the developer's established portfolio of creating on a rule of cool that should have gone out of style in the mid-00's, but hasn't. And I appreciate Blizzard's dedication to sticking to what makes a lot of their designs unique in a cool, but corny, way.

I will be clear and say that I wasn't always partial to Blizzard's designs. I loved Warcraft III, but not for it's visuals. And I was turned off to World of Warcraft for the longest time because of it's overexaggerated designs. But now I see the appeal. Concerning the Diablo series, I loved how toned down it was, even if a lot of designs were ramped up significantly by Diablo III. (Which is a guilty pleasure of mine.)

And I guess I can appreciate them also putting that star-studded steed into Diablo IV as well. There's some kind of bitter irony to it all. I'm curious as to how many people will buy this horse for a second time, and if Blizzard Entertainment is aware of it's infamy.

Diablo IV is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Vessel of Hatred expansion release date is October 8, 2024.

Review: Black Myth Wukong is a Gorgeous Chinese Epic https://www.siliconera.com/review-black-myth-wukong-is-a-gorgeous-chinese-epic/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=review-black-myth-wukong-is-a-gorgeous-chinese-epic https://www.siliconera.com/review-black-myth-wukong-is-a-gorgeous-chinese-epic/#respond Fri, 16 Aug 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1047708 Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth Wukong is a game that garnered immediate attention from its first trailer — sharp, reactive combat and gorgeous visuals awed a captive audience. And as more information about Black Myth Wukong began to trickle out from developer GameScience, it became clear that this action RPG was everything that initial trailer promised it would be. Black Myth Wukong is an ambitious action RPG that embraces its roots, making for an interesting take on the tale of the Monkey King.

The story of the Destined One is told through a handful of chapters, each featuring a new location to explore and to uncover various secrets. I traversed through dark, wet caves and verdant green forests full of anthropomorphic wolves and snakes. I ventured to a burning temple, where a once-deceased monk transformed into a massive bear and proceeded to beat me to a pulp. I navigated through a dry desert where I was assailed by rat bandits and their king, only to be tangled in combat with a foul-mouthed tiger king moments later. Meditation spots you can find littered throughout these zones provide a brief reprieve, and allow you to take in just how gorgeous the scenery is.

The world of Black Myth Wukong is a rich one, as it pulls from Chinese mythology and keeps a lot of the aesthetic of traditional Chinese artwork that makes the game look and feel special despite it's use of hyper realistic graphics. But everything about Black Myth Wukong pulls everything together, including its music. More somber tracks play as you plop down to view the scenery, whereas up-tempo music with drums and chanting accompanying some of the more fantastical boss fights. But one of my favorite things about the game were the portraits and other illustrations you unlock as you progress, as these illustrations are evocative of traditional, calligraphy artwork. And for those unfamiliar with the tale of the Monkey King, Black Myth Wukong does have a compendium of sorts that lays out the significance and backstory for characters after you've defeated them.

However, even with as powerful as my PC is, there were times when Black Myth Wukong would drop frames. And while the benchmark does give consumers a good idea of just how well the action RPG will run on their PCs, don't expect it to be smooth sailing. An overabundance of red or fire on the screen can occasionally cause your game to lag, or frames to drop. Since Black Myth Wukong is an action RPG that is reliant on frame-based dodges to fully utilize specific skills, this is a shame. But for the purpose of the review, I dropped my settings down from High to Medium, which resolved most of my problems in that department. Because other than a few technical hiccups, Black Myth Wukong is a more than proficient action game.

The controls in Black Myth Wukong are extremely tight, with precise movement and dodging being one of the core strengths of the game. You can't just dodge with reckless abandon, because while you are given more than enough stamina to spam your dodge, the Destined One will need to take a brief moment to recollect himself after every third flip or roll. I had to force myself to get out of the mindset of spamming my dodge after recently replaying Elden Ring, and had to come at Black Myth Wukong at a different angle. Combat is just as exciting, but feels more methodical and focused around the core mechanic of building up focus through light attacks to break through your opponents defense and stagger them.

Black Myth Wukong does have a skill tree, which does allow for you to upgrade your stamina, health, and unlock more attacks. While I did find a build that worked for me, I often went back and reallocated skill points if I felt I was starting to struggle against any one encounter. But for the most part, I relied heavily on building focus and landing those devastating heavy attacks while making use of the Immobilize spell. Your loadout in Black Myth Wukong is limited by comparison to games it shared a genre with, but that doesn't make it any less effective. The skill tree allowed me to level up my Immobilize spell to empower it in such a way that when I would perfectly time a freeze, I would deal extra damage to my enemy.

The game expects you make use of all of the tools at your disposal, which includes spells, transformations, items, and other abilities that lend itself well to the overall feeling of the action RPG's combat. This is the first time I've actually actively used items in an action RPG — for games like Nioh and anything in FromSoftware's catalogue of similar titles I tend to face enemies and bosses head-one, slicing through them with whatever I have on hand. So much so that I even forgot about spells in Elden Ring. But Black Myth Wukong wants you to make use of your entire arsenal, and even expects it. You can, of course, go without using spells or the powerful art of Transformation (which allows you to assume the form of specific enemies you encounter), but it will make the game significantly more difficult. That said, I didn't have too much of a problem fighting bosses or navigating through game's varied chapters.

Once I had gotten in the groove of things, and stopped mashing my dodge, everything came together. I had to be patient. I had to be reactive, and I had to wait. Making use of those frame-perfect dodges felt good, and the slight slow-down effect that accompanied them always felt cool. Learning new techniques for my staff and weaving them into my combos felt extremely rewarding. And fighting enemies that don't track your movements made encounters feel fair. I wasn't frantically trying to get out of the way of anything, because I knew the direction hits were going to land. I understood where I was safe, and if I ended up losing a fight, why I lost in the first place. Death also isn't something that really sets you back either. Shrines, locations where you level up and serve as soft checkpoints, are usually close to boss arenas, and whatever currency you've lost upon defeat can easily be regained by fighting through whatever enemies have respawned.

But if you're really struggling, you can further help alleviate some of the difficulty of specific fights by crafting items that reduce the amount of damage taken, and upgrading your weapon or putting together new armor sets. Assembling matching pieces of armor does provide you with incremental stat boosts and some neat passives, but if you're like me and like pressing your luck, you can absolutely beat Black Myth Wukong with armor you've obtained in the early hours of the game. You can also empower your healing gourd with additional effects too. Black Myth Wukong has a lot of different features to chew your teeth on, and allows for you to experiment with your style of play.

Do you want to deal poison damage to enemies? You can do that through summoning a poisoner to lay venomous snakes around the field that shoot poison at your target. Want to inflict burn damage on an enemy? You can do that through your Transformation skill. Or maybe you just want to focus on countering attacks with perfectly timed dodges and strikes. You can absolutely do that too.

Overall, Black Myth Wukong is a gorgeous game that has taken great efforts to make an interesting and exciting reimagining of one of East Asia's most popular myths. The game is solid, and outside of frame drops, otherwise performs very well. And it's probably one of the best action RPG I've played all year.

Black Myth: Wukong will release for PC via Steam and PS5 on August 20, 2024.

The Castlevania Dead by Daylight Crossover is for Curse of Darkness Fans Like Me https://www.siliconera.com/the-castlevania-dead-by-daylight-crossover-is-for-curse-of-darkness-fans-like-me/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-castlevania-dead-by-daylight-crossover-is-for-curse-of-darkness-fans-like-me https://www.siliconera.com/the-castlevania-dead-by-daylight-crossover-is-for-curse-of-darkness-fans-like-me/#respond Tue, 06 Aug 2024 22:30:00 +0000 https://www.siliconera.com/?p=1046363 Castlevania Dead by Daylight

When the Castlevania and Dead by Daylight crossover was announced, I wasn't all that excited. And I'm a pretty big Castlevania fan. I mean, I dressed in the stylings of a Castlevania character for an entire year, and even the middling Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series has grown on me after being starved of content for so long. Some of you are probably reading this thinking, "Kazuma! The Netflix series exists!" and I know that, and I don't like it.

So when Behaviour Interactive announced that it would be collaborating with Konami to bring Castlevania into the fold, I immediately assumed it would be versions of the characters that appeared in the popular Neftlix adaptation. Color me surprised when it was not. In fact, the version of Trevor and Dracula that appear in the crossover are actually two of my favorite designs. One could argue that Dracula has more or less looked the same across generations, with the version he appears as clearly being more akin to Symphony of the Night. But Trevor, oh Trevor Belmont, he's ripped right out of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and I love that.

While I might have lost some of you at Lords of Shadow, Curse of Darkness is actually my favorite Castlevania game. I love it for a lot of reasons; for Hector and Isaac, and the weird Digimon-esque Devilforging system. I just think it's a lot of fun, and I love the character designs and the sort of theatricality of it all. It's Castlevania through and through, even if you're not immediately playing a Belmont.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness was a maligned entry in the series. Almost all Castlevania fans just wanted that classic 2D platforming experience, and while Konami was desperately trying to make 3D stick for the series, it just wasn't taking. But it had all of the flavors, all of the visuals, and was a deeply satisfying game. At least to me. I'm just one of those weirdos that actually likes a lot of the less loved entries in the series, but I've always loved Curse of Darkness. This is probably why I don't care for the Netflix series, even if it has arguably done a lot more for Castlevania than Curse of Darkness has.

That's why I was totally surprised it was Curse of Darkness Trevor that made it into Dead by Daylight. Not that I'm complaining. I'm absolutely going to slap down the dollars to purchase this Chapter, even if I don't play Dead by Daylight all that much anymore. (I'm extremely casual, and have only popped in for the Silent Hill and Resident Evil Chapters.)

So I just wanna thank whoever at Behaviour Interactive and Konami came to the decision to incorporate one of the less-liked Castlevania entries into Dead by Daylight. Because Dead by Daylight is a behemoth of a game and seeing one of my favorites designs from the Castlevania games over something that's just generally popular, is awesome.

Dead by Daylight is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X. The Castlevania crossover Chapter will come to Dead by Daylight on August 27, 2024.
