The results of the 2024 Next Manga Awards have been announced, with Kagurabachi securing first place in the Comics Division. This recognition highlights the growing popularity of Ken Sotozono's series, which is serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The manga explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and growth, resonating with readers and earning it a top position in the competition. [Thanks, ddnavi!]

Kagurabachi, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2023, is both written and illustrated by Takeru Hokazono. The action-fantasy manga follows Chihiro, a young protagonist on a quest to avenge his father’s death at the hands of a group of sorcerers. Armed with an enchanted sword forged by his father, a renowned blacksmith, Chihiro’s journey involves retrieving other stolen enchanted swords from the sorcerers.

In related news, the Weekly Shonen Jump YouTube channel released a voiced manga version of Kagurabachi in English, making it the first series to be adapted into a "manga animation" with English text. While the voices are in Japanese, the English text allows the series to reach a broader audience.

Next manga award winner, Kagurabachi continues its run in Weekly Shonen Jump, with English chapters available through Viz.

Crunchyroll announced it isn’t splitting with the Bananya anime, as season 3 is heading to the streaming service. People will be able to watch Bananya Around the World starting in October 2024 via the provider.

This latest run comes about eight years after the first season and five years after the second. So far, there’s no exact release date for the first episode of season 3 of Bananya, but we do know the regions where it will be available. Crunchyroll has worldwide rights for places like North and South America, Europe, and Oceania. However, the only regions in Asia its scope covers will be the Indian Subcontinent. It will also be a simulcast series, though the number of total episodes for the run weren’t confirmed. Yuuki Kaji will also return as the main character, with Ayumi Murase debuting as Baby Sweet.

Here’s the first trailer for Bananya season 3. It features the two new leads, as well as hints at how this time the focus will be on visiting different locations.

As a reminder, the first and second seasons of the Bananya anime each consisted of 13 episodes. These tended to be two to three minutes long.

Bananya Around the World will air on Crunchyroll in October 2024.

The Boston Red Sox One Piece Night is August 28, 2024, and Toei Animation again teased the Luffy bobblehead some attendees will get and activities everyone at the game can enjoy. As a reminder, the bobble head of the character in the team jersey is only available to those who bought their ticket from the special promotional page.

The concept art mock-up for the Luffy bobblehead features him in his trademark straw hat. He also has a yellow belt and his sandals on. However, his shirt is a red Boston Red Sox jersey, rather than one of his typical ones. He’s also holding a baseball bat in his right hand, and the base shows him stepping onto home base.

Here’s how that design might end up looking:

Ahead of the game against the Toronto Blue Jays, a tentative schedule was shared. Things will kick off at 4:40, about three hours head of the game. The Sam Adams Deck at Fenway Park will host a cosplay gathering until 6:40pm. In addition, people can try out the One Piece Card Game at the Big Concourse until 8pm ET. The game itself is expected to start at 7:10pm ET. 

This is the second year in a row there’s been a collaboration event between a US sports team and One Piece. In December 2023, the Los Angeles Rams had a game day honoring the series. There was imagery around the stadium, music appeared, and people could get special items like a bag.

The Boston Red Sox One Piece Night with Luffy bobblehead will be held on August 28, 2024. The anime is on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. Viz Media handles the manga outside of Japan. The first season of the One Piece live-action adaptation is on Netflix now, with season 2 on the way.

Ahead of its December 20, 2024, a new Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie trailer shows us Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog. The video highlights existing characters from the first three films, like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Tom Wachowski, before getting into the new hedgehog’s origin story.

Things begin with Wachowski telling Sonic that he has a family now. This happens as brief clips of Tails and Knuckles, who debuted in the second live-action movie, show up. From there, we are taken to a secure facility where Shadow is being created. He breaches security and escapes. The government then calls in Team Sonic to handle the Shadow the Hedgehog escape in the film. This moment also involves a callback to the games, with Shadow in containment and touching hands with a young girl who appears to be Maria Robotnik. Dr. Robotnik's involvement is teased after the halfway point, and we actually get to hear Reeves as Shadow after the 2:20 mark.

We first learned about the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie back in February 2022. At the time, Shadow initially wasn’t revealed as part of it. The character’s involvement came up in later teases. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will appear in movie theaters on December 20, 2024. The previous two movies are available now, and the Knuckles TV show is on Paramount+.

SuperGroupies has announced that it is restocking its collection of merchandise based on the NieR Automata Ver1.1a anime. The brand gives people another chance to purchase the items on the brand's Japanese web store. It also supports global deliveries with the WorldShopping widget.

SuperGroupies originally revealed the Nier Automata Ver1.1a merchandise lineup in late September 2023. It held a pre-order window for the items until mid-October 2023. The brand first released the items in May 2024.

The collection consists of watches, wallets, and bags inspired by 2B and 9S. The wallets and watches for both characters have the same price tags of ¥14,850 (~$103.45) and ¥24,200 (~$168.60), respectively. 2B's backpack bag is priced at ¥19,800 (~$137.95), while 9S' bag costs slightly less at ¥17,600 (~$122.60).

Even though the brand has restocked the items, they are still only available in limited amounts. In less than 10 hours after SuperGroupies published the announcement tweet, only five out of the six items remain available, as 2B's wallet has already sold out.

The SuperGroupies NieR Automata Ver1.1a merchandise collection is available for purchase while stocks last. These items are specifically based on the anime adaptation of Square Enix's popular video game NieR Automata. The anime's second cour launched in July 2024.

On Goku Day 2024, May 9th, the Official Dragon Ball Site held a poll, asking fans to vote on what they thought their favorite one of Goku's many battles, from Dragon Ball through Dragon Ball Super, was. The votes have been tallied and the top 100 out of the countless battles Goku has fought have been revealed.

The top 10 fights got their own special Dragon Ball Weekly Update video, where Victory Uchida, the editor for Dragon Ball Super, and Toyotarou, Dragon Ball Super's lead illustrator discussed the list and what their favorite fights were. Toyotarou's was the final battle with Kid Buu at the end of the original run of Dragon Ball Z.

The criteria for the list were, according to the original Dragon Ball site, the following:

• Verbal sparring and rock-paper-scissors count
• As long as Goku enters the contest with the spirit of battle, battles against inorganic foes also count! However, rocks and such whose destruction is merely a casualty of another fight do not count!
• The start of a fight until the fighting stops counts as one battle. Characters who Goku fights more than once are included in the lineup as many times as they fought Goku!

The top ten battles according to the fan vote are as follows:

With this year being the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball and after the passing of series creator Akira Toriyama, fans all over the world have been expressing their fondness for the creator and his seminal work, Dragon Ball, including his co-workers.

Disney+ Japan has unveiled its September 2024 distribution lineup, which includes two notable entries from the Sword Art Online franchise. These additions reflect Disney+ Japan’s ongoing efforts to diversify its offerings with both anime and global content.

Beginning September 13, 2024, subscribers to Disney+ will have access to Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria on a Starless Night and Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night. These films are part of the Sword Art Online Progressive series, which revisits and expands upon the early events of the popular Sword Art Online anime and light novels.

In addition to the Sword Art Online films, Disney+ will also be streaming the anime Murai no Koi starting September 4, 2024. The platform's September lineup further includes a variety of international dramas, such as The Father Who Came Back Season 2, Criminal Minds: FBI vs. Unusual Crimes Season 17, and the Korean drama The Demon Kanojo is a Judge. Marvel fans can also look forward to Agatha All Along, continuing the exploration of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For those looking to delve deeper into the Sword Art Online series, the Progressive films offer a retelling of the Aincrad arc, which is one of the earliest and most crucial parts of the Sword Art Online storyline.

The crossover between Mobile Police Patlabor and Zoids will continue with a new manga serialization. Takara Tomy has revealed that it is working with Patlabor's creator group Headgear to produce a new manga adaptation of the crossover. It will be available in Fall 2024 with the title Zoids X Patlabor: Code Name B.U.D.D.Y.

The companies have also revealed the key staff members working on this new project, and most of them had previously worked on the Patlabor series. The character designer Akemi Takada and scenario writer Kazunori Ito had worked on the original Patlabor anime, and the mechanical designer Hidetaka Denjin made the AV-98 Ingram Moderoid model kit boxart. This will be the first involvement in both Zoids and Patlabor franchises for the manga artist Naoto Tsushima, who had mostly worked on Transformers manga titles.

Takara Tomy first revealed the crossover between Zoids and Patlabor in 2023 to mark the respective 40th and 35th anniversaries of both franchises. The company revealed a special model kit featuring the Metropolitan Police Force version of the Hunter Wolf, which it eventually released in June 2024.

The new manga Zoids X Patlabor: Code Name B.U.D.D.Y. will be available in the Fall season of 2024.

Sunrise has announced that it will screen new versions of the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom movie with a new epilogue in Japan. People residing in the country will be able to watch the new version in theaters for a limited time throughout the Fall season of 2024.

The new version of the movie will have over 500 updated cutscenes. However, the most important addition will be the new epilogue at the end of the movie. Sunrise will hold two separate windows for the new Gundam SEED Freedom movie screening, and each of them will feature a different epilogue. The first one will run from September 20, 2024, until October 3, 2024. The second one will be available on November 1-14, 2024.

Gundam SEED Freedom was first available in Japanese theaters from January 26, 2024, until May 23, 2024. Sunrise and Bandai Namco also worked with theaters worldwide to gradually release the movie outside Japan. The companies eventually made the movie available online via Netflix and Prime Video worldwide in early June 2024.

The new movie version of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom will be available in Japanese theaters from September 20, 2024, until October 3, 2024, and November 1-14, 2024.

Takara Tomy has revealed a new toy brand named Synergenex. The new brand, which will be under T-Spark, will have a focus on crossover items. The company will use this brand to release new collaborations between Zoids, Transformers, and Diaclone—the three mecha IPs Takara Tomy owns in Japan—and many other franchises.

The first item revealed is a transformable figure of the Shield-D-Prime that will also act as an in-house three-way crossover between Zoids, Transformers, and Diaclone. However, this product will be available in 2025.

Takara Tomy also revealed other crossover toys in the same brand that will appear earlier. The Spider Zoids Spider-Man Special toy will be available first in red and black color sets in September 2024. It will also release the Transformers-Godzilla crossover toys Optimus Prime Type MFS-3 Kiryu and Megatron Type Godzilla in November 2024.

At the same time, the company published teasers for more upcoming toys in the brand. It will release new Transformers crossover toys with Macross 7 and Monster Hunter. And while there are already Zoids crossover products with Patlabor and Monster Hunter, Takara Tomy will also release new items from this brand, as it focuses on pre-assembled action figures instead of model kits.

Despite feeling like it just started yesterday, the Jujutsu Kaisen is nearing its end. In fact, the manga might already be over by the time you read this if you wait until September 2024. Without a doubt, it is one of the most extraordinary shonen manga series in a long time. But I still feel the best part and arc of Jujutsu Kaisen is the beginning, consisting of arcs like Cursed Child, Fearsome Womb, and Vs. Mahito, that kicks things off..

In hindsight, the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen feels so different from the rest of the series. It initially kicks off in an almost horrific way. The weakness of Yuji Itadori against the curses he suddenly discovers is so fascinating. In addition, the gore felt so surprising and in stark contrast to the other, similar shonen series running at the time.

While elements of this introduction carried on throughout the rest of the series, such as the gory action, things eventually change. Gege Akutami pursues such a different vibe from the Kyoto Arc forward in Jujutsu Kaisen. Perhaps the greatest example of this is the more personal and focused nature of the early arcs of the series. It isn’t all about citywide destruction and unlocking new powers.

Instead, the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen that starts with the Cursed Child arc is simply about surviving excruciating missions against curses. The main characters, especially Yuji, have genuine character development due to their new circumstances. My personal favorite part of the entire series happens during the Vs. Mahito Arc. It's when the villain really appears for the first time. The initial impression is incredible, and only builds from there.

Mahito’s unhinged, terrifying nature is on full display here in a way that stings even more than his appearances later in the series. He feels like one of the most horrifying anime villains in a long time. We witness a man that is willing to massacre anyone and anything in his path. Worse still, he feels unstoppable at this point.

To make it even better, my favorite character in the series, Junpei, gets his moment here. Junpei is by far one of the most complex characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. His relationship with Yuji still feels like the most emotional for the protagonist, even as we near the end. It is here that Yuji is pushed to his limits and grows as a character in a much more natural way.

This isn’t to say there is no development for Yuji later on. In fact, it’s quite the contrary. My only issue with Jujutsu Kaisen is sometimes the character development and deaths Akutami used feel too forced or there just for shock value. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the onslaught of twists and turns.

But I also prefer the centralized nature of these early arcs. The twists in the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen are fewer and far between. This allows them breathing room to have enough attention and development. As such, they are still the most effective surprises and tragic character deaths, in my opinion.

This idea extends to Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as well. Yuta and Rika’s tale is a heartbreaking one that has the same level of focus and emotional resonance as the early parts of the main series. It isn’t to say that I don’t love Jujutsu Kaisen. In fact, it is quite the opposite. It took time but I adore this series.

Jujutsu Kaisen is by far the best in its category of new gen shonen series by a long shot. It just took time for me to realize that the crux of the series is over-the-top bombastic fights and shock after shock. Once I accepted this, I found this series has the best action out of any other similar series.

In fact, Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the only series of the more mature, gory side of shonen manga to not lose itself in the latter half. I find this to be a huge issue with other similar series like Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man that almost lost me entirely.

Honestly, I don’t look forward to the end of Jujutsu Kaisen because I’ve enjoyed it so much as a whole. I just still prefer the earlier parts of the manga. This is where Yuji Itadori captivated me as the most compelling shonen protagonist in a long time. He isn’t the typical savior of the world or guy rising from nothing.

Instead, almost everyone hates him and wants him dead. This only made me root for him more in these earlier story arcs. As we near the end of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, I can’t help but reminiscence fondly about this time. After all, it still feels like the best part of the series for me.

Even though Oshi no Ko is about the twins Aqua and Ruby, a lot of the early volumes of the manga focus on him instead of her. It’s understandable, since he’s penned as the primary protagonist for a while early on. However, with volume 7 of Oshi no Ko we get to see this shift as certain developments give some of Aqua’s story a sense of resolution and Ruby an opportunity to step into the spotlight again.

Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers for volume 7 of the Oshi no Ko manga below. 

Volume 7 of Oshi no Ko begins with the Tokyo Blade stage play we’ve seen coming together over the course of multiple chapters finally running. This is a huge pay-off in many ways. For one, we’re finally seeing the culmination of the rivalry between Akane and Kana. It’s also giving a troubled production a chance to come together, and seeing things actually turn out better than expected is a relief. 

But more importantly, this is a big deal for Aqua and his character arc in Oshi no Ko. We’d already seen leading up to this point that a part of him just won’t let this quest to avenge Ai die. It’s negatively affecting his daily life, with an inner voice that seems like it could also be his past identity chastising him for even considering moving on. So at the climax of this novel, we’re seeing him do what he fears most. He actually acts again. He uses emotional acting after such a long time of running, and in so doing he makes a major breakthrough about himself. 

The way this is handled in the Oshi no Ko manga is stunning, with Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari shifting between the personal revelation and Aqua’s performance. We can see how his tapping into those memories influences his behavior on-stage. Likewise, the insights he’s gaining as he does so offers this reveal into what he’s dealing with and allows him to perhaps address the issue in a way that could make his life different going forward. 

This, followed by a meaningful conversation with Toshiro Kindaichi and Taiki Himekawa, really makes Oshi no Ko volume 7 feel like it’s constantly giving the reader valuable insights into the characters. We’re finally learning more about Aqua. We’re seeing him grow. We watch as he learns more about his past. 

At the same time, Akasaka and Yokoyari do a great job of pivoting to the next part of the Oshi no Ko plot at the end of volume 7. Following the performance of Tokyo Blade, we see that Ruby was in the audience the whole time. She noticed how far everyone, Aqua and Kana included, have come as she watched the show. With that seed planted, the end of the volume takes the opportunity to shift the focus back to her and new B-Komachi. Seeing the group start to make some decisions, as well as a choice to return to her former roots, paves the way for growth on her part as well. 

Oshi no Ko volume 7 really feels like one of the more important volumes of the manga, in part because of the development it offers for Aqua. We see him embrace his pain and deal with the trauma he’s experienced for years. We watch the stage play finally come together. We see people like Kana and Akane stand out. Most importantly, we also witness a fantastic transition that shifts the story back to Ruby. It’s all handled incredibly well.

Oshi no Ko volume 7 will be available on August 27, 2024, and Yen Press will release volume 8 of the manga on November 19, 2024. The anime is streaming on HIDIVE.

Bandai Namco released a new trailer for the feature-length, virtual reality movie Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom on the official GundamInfo YouTube Channel that also confirmed its release date. The trailer showcased viewer interactions with the film, revealed its mixed reality (MR) action elements, and announced it will launch on October 3, 2024.

The movie, which is co-produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks and French VR production company Atlas V, will center on Universal Century story mercenary group Argent Kell. It is on an assassination mission targeting an Earth Federation official in U.C. 0096, around the same time as Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. The mysterious silver Gundam the nameless protagonist, controlled by the Meta Quest viewer, uses takes part in the struggle.

The trailer showcased how viewers of the film on the Meta Quest headset will be able to interact with this Gundam movie. In it, Bandai Namco stated a desire to make the viewer "become the protagonist" through first person cockpit views and motions. It is designed to feel as though the viewer will be piloting the silver Gundam themselves.

In addition, the trailer showed the two MR features. The first is a smaller interactive shooter, during which we will control a small Gundam like the RX-78 or Nu Gundam and fight off waves of mobile suits. The second will let us get up close and personal with the life-sized rendition of select Gundams of our choice, with the chosen one in the trailer being the Nu Gundam.

This is not the only 3D-CG Mobile Suit Gundam film releasing in 2024. Requiem For Vengeance will also be releasing in October 2024.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom will be available exclusively on the Meta Quest store on October 3, 2024. People can pre-order it for $15.99.

I ate at McDonald’s for lunch or dinner every day since August 20, 2024. Why? That’s the day the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio Happy Meal, which involves nine plush of characters in special “outfits,” kicked off in the US. I’m on a quest to get Silfer the Sky Dragon Kuromi and Exodia Pompompurin. But in the meantime, I have picked up a few of the other characters, and what is here makes me want more than just a one-off crossover with all the quality a fast food joint can afford.

So to refresh, in case you missed it, in the UK a Mc Donald’s Happy Meal promotion featuring ten Sanrio characters dressed as Yu-Gi-Oh characters launched in May 2024. Depending on when you would go, you’d get one of the mascots with your meal. This promotion didn’t cost any more than usual, like the recent collector’s cup affair. Now in August 2024, that same crossover event ended up repeated in the US. 

Well, almost identical. Our run doesn’t include the full “set.” Badtz-Maru as Red-Eyes Black Dragon ended up being left out. I don’t know why. Yes, I’m sad about it too.

Anyways. My quest resulted in the acquisition of four of the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio Happy Meal plush toys so far. They’re pretty great in some ways! I ended up with Dark Magician Hello Kitty (#1), Blue-Eyes White Dragon Cinnamoroll (#2), Kuriboh Keroppi (#4), and Obelisk the Tormentor Tuxedosam. These stuffed animals aren’t as traditionally soft as others or fluffy. Rather, McDonald’s went with printed fabric that focuses on accurately displaying the characters in their costumes. The attention to detail means that both the front and back of each mascot has a printed design. So say if you flip over Tuxedosam, you’ll see his lil’ penguin tail and the Obelisk the Tormentor wings. It’s cute! They also seem surprisingly durable. At least, the quality appears better than some Happy Meal toys.

But also, honestly, it’s a tad disappointing too. The string loop attached at the top of each plush is incredibly small! It made me feel like the best option for displaying it, once you get one, is to perhaps get a cork board with push pins and hang them or arrange some series of hooks somewhere. Using some sort of elastic would have offered more versatility with display options. Or, even better, a plastic hook. Perhaps it wouldn’t be secure enough to use it as a big keychain, but it’d provide more options. 

I think McDonald’s should have leaned into the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio Happy Meal crossover a bit further too. Right now, it is 100% to the benefit of Sanrio fans who want a cute mascot to display or use as a decoration. However… why aren’t there actual cards? We’ve seen Pokemon Trading Card game Happy Meal promotions before. What I’m saying is, I wanted a Blue-Eyes White Dragon card that would be completely identical to the ones found in the actual Yu-Gi-Oh card game, just with the art of the dragon replaced with the picture of Cinnamoroll dressed as that monster. 

Also, while I am very happy about these plush and plan to further ruin my health by continuing to eat Happy Meals until I get Slifer the Sky Dragon Kuromi, Exodia the Forbidden One Pompompurin, and The Winged Dragon of Ra Chococat, the items we got make me want even more merchandise based on this crossover. I’d love a cute bag or storage box with the characters on them. A more durable acrylic or rubber keychain would be fun. Maybe a small, plastic figure that’s one or two inches tall. 

Essentially, I’m saying the Yu-Gi-Oh Sanrio crossover concept is too good to just be limited to these McDonald's Happy Meal plush toys. I do love them, mind you. But it is because I love them that I think Konami and Sanrio should do even more with the idea. Also... I'm starting to get really tired of McDonald's nuggets...

FuRyu announced its next Haruhi Suzumiya figure, and it is a part of the BiCute Bunnies line that will take a famous character and put her in a bunny girl suit. It will be a prize figure found in Japanese arcades, and it will debut in January 2025. 

This figure of Haruhi features her shorter hairstyle with the familiar yellow ribbons. She has a black rabbit ear headband on and matching swimsuit. Like other figures in the line, it is expected to be about 10 inches tall (265mm). It is identical to the outfit she wore in the anime.

Here is the official social media announcement, which shows two photos of the in-progress figure.

While there’s no word about a worldwide release of the Haruhi bunny suit figure, we’ve seen other versions of the character appear worldwide. For example, there are figmas and Nendoroids of her, and Good Smile Company recently released a scale figure of her based on her light novel appearances.

A few new Haruhi Suzumiya light novels have appeared over the years. One is The Intuition of Haruhi Suzumiya. That was released by Yen Press outside Japan in 2021. The next one is The Theater of Haruhi Suzumiya, though there’s no release date for it just yet.
